Shake the Disease es el tredécimo disco sencillo del grupo inglés de música electrónica Depeche Mode, correspondiente a su compilación The Singles 81-85 publicada sólo en Europa, pero también en América debido a su inclusión en el compilatorio Catching Up With Depeche Mode que se publicó sólo en ese lado del mundo; publicado en 7 y en 12 pulgadas en 1985.1 2

Como lado B aparece el tema Flexible que se incluyó también en Catching Up With Depeche Mode. Ambos temas fueron compuestos por Martin Gore. La ingeniería del sencillo estuvo a cargo de Mark Ellis "Flood", quien al año siguiente realizaría la mezcla del sencillo de DM Stripped para su versión larga y en 1990 se encargaría de producirles el álbum Violator y en 1993 Songs of Faith and Devotion.

"Shake the Disease" is Depeche Mode's thirteenth UK single recorded at Hansa Mischraum in Berlin (released on 29 April 1985), and was one of two new songs released on the compilation The Singles (81-85) the same year, along with "It's Called a Heart". It reached number 18 in the UK singles chart. The American version of The Singles 81-85, Catching Up with Depeche Mode, also includes "Shake the Disease"'s B-side, "Flexible". The track reached the top 40 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in November 1985.

Band member Alan Wilder felt this song captured the essence of the band, stating "there's a certain edge to what we do that can make people think twice about things. If we've got a choice between calling a song "Understand Me" or "Shake the Disease", we'll call it "Shake the Disease". There's a lot of perversity and innuendo in our lyrics, but nothing direct.
