Fleetwood Mac – Will The Real Fleetwood Mac Please Stand Up?

2 x Vinyl, LP, Unofficial Release

The phrase ‘Will the Real Fleetwood Mac Please Stand Up?’ refers to a bizarre and infamous incident in the history of Fleetwood Mac in the early 1970s.

The incident, often referred to as the ‘Fake Fleetwood Mac’ controversy, involved an unauthorised group being sent on tour under the name ‘Fleetwood Mac’ without the involvement or consent of the real band members.

The background:

In 1973, Fleetwood Mac was at a crossroads. After the departure of key members such as Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer and under the leadership of Bob Welch, who was moving in a new direction, the band was already struggling to maintain its identity. Manager Clifford Davis, who had a legal claim to the name ‘Fleetwood Mac’, decided to put together a completely different line-up to tour the US as ‘Fleetwood Mac’ after the real band members either refused to go on tour or were unavailable.

The ‘Fake Fleetwood Mac’ tour:

This fake band featured musicians who previously had no connection to Fleetwood Mac, including Elmer Gantry (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar), who were members of a British band called Stretch. Clifford Davis promoted the group as Fleetwood Mac, and they performed under that name, much to the confusion and outrage of fans and promoters.

The tour did considerable damage to Fleetwood Mac's reputation at the time.

Aftermath:

The real Fleetwood Mac, led by Mick Fleetwood, filed lawsuits to regain control of their name and end the charade. The incident left a mark on the band's career, but it also acted as a wake-up call. Following this debacle, Fleetwood Mac began to rebuild its lineup, ultimately leading to the addition of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in 1974—a change that transformed the band into one of the most successful acts of all time.

Cultural Legacy:

The "Fake Fleetwood Mac" controversy remains a unique story in rock history, showcasing the pitfalls of music industry management disputes and the importance of creative ownership. It’s a testament to the resilience of the real Fleetwood Mac, who would go on to release legendary albums like Fleetwood Mac (1975) and Rumours (1977), cementing their legacy for decades to come.

Attention 1:

The recording of bootlegs and most times there quality cannot be compared to today's mixed LPs.

But these LPs capture the live feeling with all the extra noises like no other releases and are real collector's items

Attention 2:

As an explanation, since bootlegs were and are not allowed to print the real titles of the songs on the label and some did not stick to this, fantasy titles were sometimes chosen.

Of course, the titles listed in the track list (see above) are also on the LP.
