Bajista/guitarrista de rock miembro fundador y creador del grupo musical Genesis. Rutherford siempre fue un buen bajista aunque su incursión en la guitarra no es muy convincente, quedó demostrado que su capacidad con las 4 cuerdas era más vasta, con un sonido muy característico a la hora de tocar el bajo. Sonido que se ve reflejado muy bien a lo largo de toda su carrera (escuchar temas Watchers of the Skies, Turn it on again, entre otros). Es difícil hablar por separado de Genesis y su vida ya que es aún miembro permanente y sin duda uno de los pilares junto a Tony Banks.

El año 1979 marca su debut como solista con el fabuloso "Smallcreep's Day". En este disco logra seguir el estilo de su banda pero sin el éxito de esta misma. Mike saca otro disco bajo su nombre "Acting Very Strange" animándose a cantar y tocar todos los instrumentos excepto la batería, que cuenta con la participación del batero de The Police: Stewart Copeland en percusiones. Sin embargo, el resultado es desastroso, lo cual le lleva a replantearse su futuro en solitario. De este modo nace el proyecto Mike & The Mechanics.
