JAPAN - GENTLEMEN TAKE POLAROIDS - VINILO ORIGINAL 1981 EDICION VIRGIN RECORDS

Japan fue una banda de corto éxito pero de interminable influencia, gracias sobre todo a este disco y a la posterior carrera en solitario de su cantante y compositor David Sylvian. Fue su mejor disco según la crítica internacional. Influenciados por el Glam Rock y sonidos electrónicos emergentes en la época fueron capaces de crear un nuevo estilo, algunos lo llamarían New Romantic (aunque ellos siempre huyeron de tal etiqueta).

El disco tiene una escucha fácil en primera instancia pero tras varias audiciones gana en complejidad. Las canciones van tomando cada una, y por separado, un cuerpo distinto siendo a su vez capítulos de una misma novela. Se logra disfrutar de cada instrumento que va sonando y eso es muy difícil de hacer para una banda y para un músico en una misma canción. Las austeras cajas de ritmo de la época se solapan a la perfección con las evoluciones de Jansen. El sorprendente bajo sin trastes que tocaba el desaparecido Karn le daba a las composiciones de Sylvian una riqueza inédita hasta el momento. La voz barítona y vibrante de Sylvian llena de romanticismo los ritmos a medio tiempo del disco hasta conseguir enamorarnos para siempre.

Sin dudarlo este es uno de mis discos favoritos. Y creo que también de gente como aquellos Duran Duran, The Cure, Mecano, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, y de otros más de hoy como The Horros, Twin Shadow, Neon Indian, Metronomy, M´83… No me canso ni me cansaré jamás de oírlo. No puedo más que recomendar que lo tengas (si lo encuentras en vinilo, mejor).

Gentlemen Take Polaroids is the fourth studio album by the English band Japan, released on 24 October 1980 by record label Virgin.
The album was preceded by the release of the title track as a single in October 1980, which peaked at number 60 in the UK Singles Chart, the group's first single to chart.

Gentlemen Take Polaroids was released on 24 October 1980. It was moderately successful in the UK, where it peaked at number 51.The album was later certified Gold by the BPI in 1986 for 100,000 copies sold.

No further singles were immediately taken from the album, though "Nightporter" (influenced by the works of French composer Erik Satie, most particularly his Gymnopedies) was remixed and released as a single in November 1982, just after the band announced that it was splitting. It peaked at number 29 in the UK Singles Chart, though both the edited 7" version and the full-length 12" remix remain unreleased on CD to this day.

The album was reissued in 2003, with slightly different cover art (taken from the same photo session as the original cover) and three bonus tracks (see below).
Gentlemen Take Polaroids has been well-received by critics. Writing in Smash Hits magazine in November 1980, Steve Taylor gave the album 8/10 and wrote: "If Brian Eno, rather than Bryan Ferry, had rerouted the original direction of Roxy Music, this might well have been the result...

In his retrospective review, Ned Raggett of AllMusic called it "unquestionably the album in which Japan truly found its own unique voice and aesthetic approach.
