Once upon a time es el séptimo álbum de estudio de Simple Minds, aparecido en octubre de 1985.

Cuatro singles fueron extraídos del álbum; Alive and kicking (número 7 en Reino Unido y 3 en Billboard Hot 100 y 2 en Mainstream Rock en Estados Unidos), All the things she said (número 9 en Reino Unido y 28 en Billboard Hot 100 y 9 en Mainstream Rock en Estados Unidos), Sanctify yourself (número 10 en Reino Unido y 14 en Billboard Hot 100 y 3 en Mainstream Rock en Estados Unidos) y Ghostdancing (13 en Reino Unido). El álbum llegó al número 1 en las listas británicas (siendo certificado con tres Discos de platino) y alcanzó el puesto 10 en las listas de Estados Unidos (con 5 semanas consecutivas en el Top 10 de Billboard 200 y 16 semanas en el Top 20, y certificado con Disco de oro), 2 en Italia y 3 en Canadá.

Los éxitos de synthpop profuso de la banda se habían relajado un poco, y el estilo encantador de interpretación Charlie Burchill era más notorio, así como los bellos coros de Robin Clark, que lanzaron a la popularidad canciones como Alive & kicking y Sanctify yourself.

"Sanctify Yourself" is a song released by Scottish rock band Simple Minds as the second single from their seventh studio album Once Upon a Time in January 1986. The song reached number 10 in the UK Singles Chart and number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Sanctify Yourself was a song that displayed what a different ethos was at work during the time of its creation. In popular music culture today could you imagine a rock group putting out a song with the main theme being the process of becoming holy and have that song become a top 10 hit? The song married a righteous dance beat with Kerr pleading to the better angels of our nature to turn from evil to good. “Control yourself, love is all you need, control yourself, in your eyes, sanctify yourself, be a part of me, sanctify yourself, sanctify, sanctify yourself set yourself free.” The song in the final verse speaks to helping those in poor circumstances, “…Giving hope and making more chances, well I hope and pray that maybe someday you’ll come back down here and show me the way.” Kerr totally sells the song’s theme without embarrassing himself, because he is completely heartfelt in his desire. The track is a revival set to song and utterly uplifting in its message.
