The Mission —conocidos como The Mission UK en los Estados Unidos para diferenciarlos de una agrupación de R&B de Filadelfia— es una banda británica de rock gótico formado en 1986 en la ciudad de Leeds por los exmiembros de The Sisters of Mercy, Wayne Hussey y Craig Adams.

Alcanzaron una gran fama en Norteamérica y Europa, pero especialmente en el Reino Unido gracias a los álbumes God's Own Medicine, Children y Carved in Sand, por mencionar algunos. Sin embargo, la salida de tres de sus integrantes originales a principios de 1992, llevó a la banda a un decline comercial y con ello a su primera separación en 1996. En 1999 Wayne decidió reformar el grupo con nuevos músicos, donde lanzaron nuevos álbumes de estudio y a su vez estuvieron en extensas giras, pero por decisión de Wayne se tomaron un receso indefinido en 2008.

Para el 2011 y con la conmemoración del 25° aniversario, Wayne, Adams, Hinkler y el baterista Mike Kelly se reunieron para una extensa gira que los llevó a varios países del mundo. A mediados de 2012 anunciaron que trabajarían en un nuevo disco de estudio llamado The Brightest Light que salió al mercado a fines de septiembre de 2013.

Son considerados como una de las «bandas fundamentales de la invasión británica de rock gótico» y hasta el 2013 se estimó que sus discos superaban los 4 millones de copias vendidas.

Tras promocionar el disco por Europa abriendo en ocasiones los conciertos de The Cult, el sello Mercury Records lanzó el álbum recopilatorio The First Chapter en 1987 que contiene los sencillos previos a su debut y algunas versiones.5 Con la gira World Crusade Tour tocaron en Alemania, Países Bajos, Dinamarca, Italia y Francia, entre otros países europeos durante el primer semestre de 1987, mientras que en junio tocaron por primera vez en Estados Unidos compartiendo escenario en ocasiones con The Psychedelic Furs.

The Mission (known as The Mission UK in the United States) are an English gothic rock band formed in 1986.

Initially known as The Sisterhood, the band was started by frontman Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams (both from the Sisters of Mercy), soon adding drummer Mick Brown (Red Lorry Yellow Lorry) and guitarist Simon Hinkler (Artery and Pulp). Aside from Hussey, the line-up has changed several times during the years and the band has been on hiatus twice.

The band's catalogue consists of nine main albums (God's Own Medicine, Children, Carved in Sand, Masque, Neverland, Blue, Aura, God is a Bullet and The Brightest Light) with several complementing albums, compilations and other miscellaneous releases also in existence.

The First Chapter is a compilation album by gothic rock band The Mission. It gathered the material released on the first two EPs released through the Chapter 22 label. Titled I (featuring Serpents Kiss) and II (featuring the double A-side "Like A Hurricane" and "Garden Of Delight") the album was released on Mercury Records in June 1987. It includes all the songs from the first EP in its entirety, but omits the original versions of "The Crystal Ocean" (from the 12") and Garden Of Delight (from the 7" and ltd. edition 12") from the second. The US release was augmented with the b-sides of the V (Severina) EP. The tracks that were originally left off this compilation were included on the expanded and remastered edition. This restored (and repositioned) both the short intermissions and 'swan song' from the II EP.
