The Stranglers – The Gospel According To The Meninblack (K28P-142)

- is the fifth studio album by the British band The Stranglers, released in February 1981. It is still considered their most experimental and controversial work.

The Stranglers had already enjoyed significant success in the late 1970s with albums such as Rattus Norvegicus (1977), No More Heroes (1977), and The Raven (1979).

With The Gospel According to the Meninblack, however, they moved significantly away from the accessible punk/new wave sound.

The album is based on the conspiracy theory surrounding the "Men in Black" – mysterious government agents or extraterrestrial beings who allegedly intimidate UFO witnesses. The band linked this theme with religion, paranoia, and the occult.

Commercial:

Only reached number 8 in the UK charts (in comparison, The Raven reached number 4).

Reviews:

At the time, largely negative to confused. Many considered it "too out of touch."

Today:

The album enjoys cult status among Stranglers fans and is acclaimed as a bold, radical concept album that was ahead of its time.
