The Who / The High Numbers – The First Complete Rock Opera
2 x Vinyl, LP, Unofficial Release
The high numbers
Profile:
For just a few months in 1964 (roughly from July to October), The Who changed their name to High Numbers and released a single under that name before reverting to the more original and appropriate ‘The Who’.
The name change resulted from a collaboration with Pete Meaden, a mod who briefly managed the band in mid-1964 (Helmut Gorden was also involved in management with Meaden during this time).
Meaden was instrumental in aligning the band's music and image more closely with the mod movement, which was also reflected in the choice of the name ‘The High Numbers’, which came from mod slang.
In November 1964, ‘The High Numbers’ wisely changed their name back to ‘The Who’.
By this time they had also changed management, replacing Meaden with Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp.
Whether this was intentional or not, it also erased any stigma that had been placed on them due to the High Numbers flop and allowed them to present their first single ‘I Can't Explain’ from 1965 as the debut of a brand new band, ‘The Who’.
The High Numbers, a precursor to The Who, have a fascinating connection to the history of rock opera. Although the High Numbers themselves were only a short-lived version of the cult band, they helped shape the sound of The Who, which ultimately led to the creation of Tommy - hailed as the first complete rock opera.
