While many of these stories elicit chuckles, even guffaws, others elicit sympathy more than humor. The Last Patrician, for instance, a story I appreciated though the two mains are rather pompous and conceited, shows a young man's hope and misconception in a girl he thinks he loves, putting him through a terrible ordeal of disappointment and disillusionment. Other tales feel too distant for me to connect with.

Stories I like:

Jack-Knives from Heaven (very funny dialogue, full of childish mispronunciation and misconception)

The Roof Sitter (so satisfying to see that smug college student floored)

Mr. K*A*P*L*A*N (this story would likely be banned in today's racial-sensitive society, though I find its humor inoffensive)

The Last Patrician (how many of us have seen what we want to see in someone, only to be disappointed)

Zenobia's Infidelity (though I feel rather bad for the unwanted elephant; the narrator showed little affection for it)

The Rummy Affairs of Old Biffy

Gertrude the Governess (seems to poke fun at family and romantic drama, love at first sight, happy endings, the desirable governess trope; my main reason for liking it, though, is just the story itself--I do not tire of the pattern of rich man falls in love with lowly girl)

Father Opens My Mail

Boggains in the Bronx (realizing that we can receive our desires but in the wrong form!)

Christmas Afternoon (cynical but true--families, even on holidays, are full of tensions)

How We Kept Mother's Day
