PHILLIPS BROOKS, the noted New England preacher, once said to his congregation, In every pew there sits a person with a broken heart. After having spent almost thirty-five years in the ministry and having observed countless thousands of people all over the world, I am convinced he was exactly right. Job, the ancient writer, summarized it so succinctly when he lamented, Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble (Job 14:1).
A few days and full of trouble! How true! How pathetically true! And yet there are some folks who think they have escaped the curse of trouble. Enchanted by the soothing winds of prosperity, they paint their portraits of life, splashing against the canvas only the soft and gentle pastel colors of laughter, contentment, happiness and well-being. As an untrained dabbler, they choose many varied colors and different hues, a myriad of shades, but all monotonously omitting the dark strokes of adversity.
But the tragedy is, real life is not like that. Real life is a multiplicity of other colors - dark and harsh colors - colors of pain, tears, disappointment, suffering and death. And any portrait of life painted without that hard backdrop of human affliction is at the very best but a grotesque distortion - a fanciful illusion built upon short-sighted observation. Fallen man was destined to hurt and despair. It?s our lot to suffer. We are appointed to tears and it?s highly unlikely any one of us will ever get through this earthly journey without somewhere being touched by the heartaches and sorrows that are so common to all mankind.
These trials and hurts come to us in assorted sizes and odd shapes. Sometimes they appear as open graves, rudely robbing us of cherished loved ones. At other times they?re like the fiery darts of unguarded words. Quite often they arrive like the winds of morning.
How they come and why they come really doesn?t matter, does it? The fact is, they do come. And when they come, they hurt. They hurt deeply - sometimes so deeply we think it will never stop aching. Many of you reading this book know exactly what I am talking about. You have already experienced the unexplainable agony of a broken heart. Like the Psalmist you cannot help but say, My heart is sore pained within m e . . . (Psalm 55:4). Like an oppressive cloud of darkness some unexpected grief has settled down upon you. It?s crying time for you and for your family. But for others of you it may not have yet arrived. It?s still praise God and hallelujah season over at your house. It?s a time to laugh and feel good. Tears and sorrow are as yet unknown and unseen visitors to you and to your loved ones.
But it won?t last for very long! Somewhere out there beyond a future sunrise there?s a heartache waiting just for you and there?s no way you will ever be able to detour around it regardless of how hard you may try. So, what are you going to do? How are you going to handle it when it comes your time to suffer? How a r e you going to stand when you don?t understand? Does our Lord have any answer for it? Has He provided some divine solution through which our heartaches, sorrows, and broken spirits can ultimately be healed? Yes, praise God, He has!
In the following pages we are going to examine three simple steps which, if taken in childlike faith, will bring to us God?s certain remedy for a troubled spirit. It is my earnest and sincere hope that these brief words shall find their way into the hands and hearts of troubled and hurting saints of God - disillusioned and hopeless believers - some perhaps on the very brink of despair, and that once having read them they shall experience . . . GOD?S CURE FOR A BROKEN HEART!
