I Am the Lucky One is a powerful and deeply personal memoir of survival, identity, family, and healing.
Roberta MacKinnon was only nine months old when she and her sister were placed in a children?s home in Fort Vermilion, Alberta. Her mother believed the separation would be temporary, but when she returned, she was told that her daughters had been adopted out to the United States. They had not been. Instead, they remained hidden in the children?s home, beginning a lifelong journey marked by separation, unanswered questions, and a search for belonging.
Raised away from her birth family and Indigenous community, Roberta grew up carrying experiences of physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse. As a child, she struggled to understand why she was punished, why she was made to feel ashamed of who she was, and why she could not return to the mother and family she longed for. Her experiences shaped the way she understood love, trust, family, and her own identity.
As she grew older, Roberta faced homelessness, difficult relationships, motherhood, illness, loss, and the continuing effects of childhood trauma. Yet her story is not defined only by what happened to her. It is also a story of perseverance. She eventually returned to education as an adult, earning a bachelor?s degree in First Nations and Aboriginal Counselling and later a Master?s Diploma in Education. She describes education as an important part of her healing and her journey toward understanding the experiences she had carried for so many years.
Along the way, Roberta began reconnecting with her Indigenous identity, her birth family, and the people and places that helped her understand where she came from. She became a mother and grandmother and found a deeper sense of love and belonging through her family. Her story ultimately becomes one of remembering, grieving, confronting the past, forgiveness, and survival.
I Am the Lucky One gives voice to a survivor whose childhood was marked by separation and trauma and whose adulthood became a search for identity, connection, education, and healing. It is a deeply personal account of what it means to lose one?s sense of belonging and to spend a lifetime finding it again.
