Published in 1926, Jig-Saw (also published under the title The Marylebone Miser) is a classic locked-room mystery novel. Released during the 1920s, the book helped solidify Eden Phillpotts? reputation as a major contributor to English detective fiction. The story presents a complex murder puzzle that must be meticulously pieced together by the sleuth. Contemporary critics and fellow mystery writers frequently praised the author?s ingenuity and credibility, while modern retrospectives note that Jig-Saw is particularly memorable for its startling conclusion, a twist that anticipated the darker, more psychological tone of modern crime fiction.
Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960), was an English poet, dramatist, and novelist. Born in Mount Abu, India, he grew up in Plymouth and worked as an insurance clerk for a decade before dedicating himself to writing. Phillpotts maintained a remarkable output of three or four books annually for half a century. His varied works earned him admiration from literary giants like Jorge Luis Borges and Agatha Christie, who dedicated her novel Peril at End House to him. However, his personal life contains a grim legacy. His daughter and co-writer, Adelaide, later stated in an interview that he sexually abused her, describing an incestuous relationship that lasted from her childhood until her early thirties. It is important to include this history when reviewing Phillpotts? output and impact on history.
