Leaving the Grid touches on memory, grief, the earth and its waters, and family. In expressing longings for things past and alternative ways forward, these poems express the yearning for refilled aquifers in a cooler climate, the lives of lost trees, the father who died young, and the daughter who left home and has yet to reappear. Yet to reappear- so there must also be hope. At its most basic, this is a book about constraints and the forms of freedom. About how we define them and how we choose which routes to follow. How we move aside the boulders that block paths, find new roads, and redefine our needs to make them accessible. How, in other words, we find the agency to see and create the most nourishing ways to be. Leaving the Grid is about where we want to be going and how we might get there.
