The Spider?s Web, the first volume of the Mashahu trilogy, is a sweeping historical novel that follows several intertwined families through the final years of French colonial rule in Algeria. At its heart is the Irathen family, whose ordeal begins in 1871, when Ali is forced to flee his village after an uprising against colonial authorities, and seeks refuge in the Casbah of Algiers, leaving a wound that echoes across generations. His grandson Salem later travels to America, determined to earn enough to reclaim the family?s confiscated lands-only to discover that winning freedom is far harder than recovering property. Arezki, the most educated of the family, becomes a postal worker after colonial restrictions derail his studies. Beneath the routine of his job, he serves the clandestine networks of the National Liberation Front (FLN), becoming a crucial link in the resistance.
Their story intersects with that of the Morins, a French settler family long established in Algeria. They never question the injustices surrounding them-until their daughter Hélène forces them to confront the realities they had ignored and to reconsider their place in the country they call home.
Another thread follows the Chorfi family, humble yet proud, who invest all their hopes in their only daughter, Nérimène. Driven by a deep sense of injustice and a hunger for freedom, she joins the Resistance after her expulsion from school, ultimately honoring the sacrifices her parents made for her.
Elias Tabet, a lawyer who returns from France with his Breton wife, a physician, and their son Amine, a young philosophy graduate. All three come to serve their community in fields where the needs are immense. Elias soon confronts the corruption and institutional racism embedded in the colonial justice system, and his lawyer?s robe gradually becomes a banner of defiance. Amine finds his ideals tested by the country?s harsh realities. His intellectual commitment transforms into armed struggle, and he becomes an officer of the National Liberation Army (ALN) admired for his discipline, courage, and strategic insight.
Among the novel?s unforgettable figures is JePo, a child of Bab el Oued from a Jewish family rooted in Algeria for over two thousand years. A comic genius and master of disguise, he turns his barbershop into an FLN safe house and repeatedly outwits the paratroopers with his antics and irreverent sketches. Elusive yet deeply endearing, he remains a living enigma.
The war also shapes the fate of Amine and Nérimène, whose love is shattered by the conflict. During a deadly ambush that claims the life of his commander, Amine narrowly escapes and is presumed dead, leaving Nérimène to mourn him. Hélène, meanwhile, is devastated by the loss of Alain, mortally wounded in a bombing.
Around them gravitate countless others-Rougi and his son Miro, H?Mida, Loinduciel, Touvabien, and thousands of anonymous men and women whose courage sustains the resistance. Operating in secrecy and at great personal risk, they form the indispensable network that allows the FLN to survive repression and continue the struggle.
As violence intensifies, these characters become bound together in an expanding web of fighters, activists, workers, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. Their individual sacrifices strengthen the collective effort to achieve freedom. Some rebuild their lives, while others pay with their lives.
The struggle culminates in Algeria?s independence in July 1962. The novel closes on a note of triumph shadowed by foreboding: Algeria has won its freedom, but the battle to define the nation it will become has only just begun.
The Spider?s Web tells the story of a people reclaiming their dignity and destiny, laying the foundation for the larger saga explored in the subsequent volumes of the Mashahu trilogy.
