Wayne Kowalski woke at 4:50 on a Monday morning in October and did the math he did every morning: leave by five-ten, clock in at six, never late. He was twenty-three years old, a temp worker eleven weeks into an assignment at Prairie Star Packing in Hollow Creek, Iowa, employed by Heartland Staffing of Fort Dodge - belonging to everybody and nobody. He was saving for the diesel mechanic program at the community college, dreaming of full-time hire, of benefits, of security. At 6:41 that morning, feeding trim into Grinder Number Three with its safety guard leaning against the wall, his sleeve caught. The auger took the cuff, and then it took his left arm below the elbow.
The official record reads, in full: Case 26-104 - 10/5 - Grinding room - Laceration, left forearm - checked other recordable, zero days away, zero days on restriction - first aid, returned to work 10/6.
A laceration. First aid. Back to work the next day. While Wayne lay in a hospital in Iowa City with a stump the length of a coffee mug, the work order reinstalling the grinder?s guard was already on file, timestamped twenty-six minutes before the accident, and the safety director was telling himself it was the only way - that the plant couldn?t survive another recordable, that the DART rate couldn?t take it, that fourteen hundred people were counting on him.
Carla Mendez knows the plant. Three years ago, she signed the report on a fatality at Prairie Star - a dead maintenance man, broken lockout work orders, and her own careful finding of employee misconduct. Every word was defensible. Every word was a lie. The agency moved her to a cubicle, and she has spent three years on intake forms, telling herself it was fine.
It was never fine. Now Wayne?s mother is on her phone, crying over a speakerphone, telling her the plant wrote down cut and asked her to sign a statement saying Wayne told them the guard was on. He never told them anything. He was unconscious when the helicopter took him.
Carla opens the inspection. She walks back into Prairie Star with a green assistant and a brass scale of justice her father gave her on graduation day - a man who lost two fingers at a cannery in 1989 and went back to work Monday. What she finds in the plant?s records is not a single bad morning but a system: temps treated as disposable, injuries filed in the gap, numbers kept beautiful at the price of bodies.
Recordable is an investigative corporate thriller with the procedural weight of a federal case file and the moral gravity of a reckoning. For Carla Mendez, this is the inspection she has to get right - because the boy in the hospital, the dead man in her report, and the father with eight fingers all deserve the same thing: the truth, written down exactly as she saw it.
