When it comes to the matter of writing books, the author of Ecclesiastes humorously declared, ...of making many books there is no end... (Ecclesiastes 12:12). When I recently asked a close preacher friend if he had read my last book, he immediately quipped, I certainly hope so! Apparently those who do not write books are not nearly as excited about them as those of us who do.
Well, in keeping with that making many books here is another offering from this travel-worn evangelist who will very soon celebrate fifty years in the ministry. I am not real certain that makes me any wiser or more perceptive than my younger peers, but it does at least give a whole lot more to talk about. And as they say of older preachers, their stories go on...and on...and on...and on!!
Although this is my twelfth book, I harbor no vain illusions of being a gifted or accomplished writer. As I have eluded to in one of these chapters, I am at the very best just a plain and unadorned one horse preacher. My greatest delight is attempting to preach pointed and uncomplicated evangelistic messages which hopefully will help the unsaved come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Because of that rather narrow, but chosen, emphasis my past books have been very much like my speaking - simple, ordinary and profusely filled with personal and biographical illustrations. Whether good or bad, this present publication is in that same vein.
As in several previous books, I have enclosed a short chapter which was written by my wife, Carole. The brief segments she has contributed in the past have been unusually and warmly received by many readers.
I am especially indebted to my dear friend Dr. Warren Wiersbe who has repeatedly encouraged me in my efforts to write. While he is far too wise to see much realistic hope in this feeble pen, thankfully, he is far too kind to discourage me from trying. Each time he has received my latest book his standard reply has always been, Now get started on the next one!
I am deeply grateful for that kind and gracious prodding from one of this generation?s most prolific writers and one whom I consider to be a real hero of the faith.
Those who take the time to read this small treatise will probably find very little theology to enlighten them - but hopefully a little doxology to encourage them. It is my earnest and sincere prayer that these brief meditations which have blessed and encouraged me so much will also do the same for those who read them.
