He has solved six murders. Now someone is counting on nobody believing him about the seventh.
At three o?clock on a foggy April morning, Thurstan Pickersgill is found on the towpath in his pyjamas, unable to name the lock beside him.
The doctors blame an infection and a new prescription. But a visit to the memory clinic brings more questions, and by Holy Week his daughter has organised a rota, his friends are keeping things from him, and everyone seems to have an opinion about what he can manage.
Then Eldred Nuttall dies in his almshouse chair, his oxygen switched off at the wall.
The last man born aboard a working boat, Eldred carried a lifetime of canal memories. Thurstan sat with him that afternoon. He knows Eldred was frightened of someone.
The doctor calls it a natural death. Nobody wants the old keeper?s suspicions-especially after what happened on the towpath.
But Thurstan knows something that has nothing to do with a memory test.
Lock Two is closed for repairs. No boat can come down the flight.
So when the last person to see Eldred alive says she left when the last boat came down past the pub, he hears a lie where everyone else hears an ordinary detail.
He recognises the voice that tells it, too.
Proving what happened will mean challenging the people determined to protect him-and facing a suspicion he would give anything to be wrong about.
Stoppage at Lock Two is Book Seven in the Monday Puzzle Club Mystery series-a tender, wry Easter mystery of memory, pride and friendship in a Midlands canal town where being cared for can begin to feel like being silenced.
A clean cozy mystery with a complete fair-play solution, no graphic content, no explicit scenes and no bad language.
