British higher education is in a mess.
Students build up enormous debt to attend university but often leave with little to show for it. The expansion of higher education has outpaced demand for graduates, reducing the wage premium that those who attended university could once command. More graduates than ever are stuck in jobs for which a degree was never really needed.
But it is not only graduates who are finding the current situation unsustainable. Many universities have become overly dependent on recruiting overseas students on excessive fees, which are used to cross-subsidise home students and research. Entrance standards have been lowered to accommodate lucrative international students. Declining academic standards have led to grade inflation, which reduces the value of degrees as a signal to employers of ability and achievement.
Meanwhile, on too many campuses there has been a worrying move away from the liberal principles of free enquiry and freedom of expression which higher education is supposed to inculcate. Instead, universities increasingly exhibit a ?greenhouse effect? in which diversity of thought grows rare.
This volume addresses all of these problems and more. In eleven incisive chapters, leading academics, economists and writers with direct experience of Britain?s ailing universities explain just what has gone wrong and what can be done to fix them.
