On Tessarine, a mineral-starved mining moon locked in perpetual war, death is only an administrative inconvenience. The fallen are rebuilt from local biomass and stored genetic imprints inside industrial cradles, where missing elements are improvised and every soldier carries a Substitution Ledger cataloging what was lost and what replaced it. Tamsin Vey, a Directorate death-investigator on her fifth reconstitution, wakes to a body laced with monocrystalline silicon and devoid of her own childhood memories. When she is assigned to the impossible case of a trench private whose cradle ran to completion but produced an empty, unignited corpse, she begins pulling at threads the colony was never meant to unravel. Following the casualty manifests through the sulfur-choked drifts, the bootleg copper works of the undercity, and the classified records vaults reveals a chilling truth: the resource shortages are deliberate policy. With each death and reassembly, the regime systematically strips loyalty, attachment, and the will to dissent. As internal security moves in with caustic flushes and liquid nitrogen to erase the evidence, Tamsin must navigate the fragile remains of her own humanity to confront the architect of the colony?s stolen lives. The Imperfect Archive is a searing cybernetic existential noir exploring the cost of survival, the geometry of state control, and what remains of the soul when memory itself becomes an expendable currency.
