The Pelican: and Other Poems of Dark Reverence is essentially a series of spirited invitations. These eighty-four poems grew out of an intention to live with a heart held relentlessly open. Each piece is a journey of a sort. Here are celebrations and laments, starlit prayers and accountings of unusual communion. Here are meadows and canyons, classrooms and temples. Here are ravens and bears, songbirds and deer. Here are youth and elder, lover and foe. Here are trust and terror and elation and despair. Above all, here are meant to dwell glimmers: glimmers of gratitude for the light, and reverence for the dark.
