The Seventh Passenger
A haunting literary mystery that spans four centuries and two oceans, The Seventh Passenger follows a Mauritian archivist who discovers a wrong count in an 1834 indenture register-and the presence that has been waiting for someone to notice.
When Nadia Ramgoolam-Lafleur finds a ghostly seven beneath the corrected total in a colonial ledger, she uncovers a chain of counting that stretches from Dutch shipwrecks to Chagossian exiles, from the cane fields of Belle Vue Harel to the oil-soaked shores of Mahébourg. Every reader who has tried to fix the number has made something stronger. Every clerk who has acknowledged it has fed a debt that grows with each generation. And as a national ceremony approaches-one that will reconcile every register in the archive with a single press of a button-Nadia must decide whether to correct the count or do something no one in a hundred and eighty-six years has dared: set a place at the table for the one who was never named.
