Amenhotep was the name of several pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, including Amenhotep I, II, III, and IV, the latter better known as Akhenaten. Each left a distinct mark on Egyptian history.

Amenhotep I (c. 1527–1506 BC)

Son of Ahmose I, founder of the New Kingdom.

He ruled for 21 years, with a relatively peaceful reign.

He promoted architectural projects, such as the artisans' village at Deir el-Medina.

He was deified after his death, something uncommon among pharaohs.

Amenhotep II (c. 1427–1401 BC)

Grandson of Amenhotep I. An active military leader, he expanded Egypt's borders into Syria and Nubia.

He consolidated Egyptian power in Asia and Africa.

Amenhotep III (c. 1391–1353 BC)

He ruled for almost 40 years, during a period of great economic and artistic splendor.

His reign marked the height of the New Kingdom.

He promoted art and monumental architecture, such as the Colossi of Memnon.

Amenhotep IV / Akhenaten (c. 1353–1336 BC)

He revolutionized Egyptian religion by imposing monotheism, centered on the sun god Aten.

He founded a new capital: Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna).
