Created out of the demise of True West, this duo of vocalist Gavin Blair and lead guitarist Richard McGrath headed to the Pacific Northwest to record. In 1989, Fool Killers released its debut album, Out of State Plates, on California's Mad Rover label. Named after a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet, the group took a year off while Richard McGrath toured with Stan Ridgeway. After that tour, both McGrath and Blair reunited for the band's second album, The Marva Miracle. The band has been compared to Right as Rain and Thirteenth Floor Elevators for its blending of country and roots music with psychedelic rock.
