This out-of-print two-LP set has all of the music that would be reissued on the Original Jazz Classics CDs The George Wallington Trios and Jazz for the Carriage Trade. Pianist Wallington, an important bop pioneer, is heard on 15 trio performances from 1952-53 (with drummer Max Roach and either Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford and Curly Russell on bass) and with his 1956 quintet, an impressive outfit that also stars trumpeter Donald Byrd and altoist Phil Woods. While the former performances are quite concise and emphasize the pianist's originals, the latter has jammed versions of three standards plus tunes by Woods and Frank Foster. A well-rounded and fairly definitive two-fer.
