Mystery Of Love |
This set was recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1974. By this time, Randy Weston had already spent six years living in North Africa, and his explorations were fruitfully influencing his music. The three extended original pieces comprising this release are a bracing mix of post-bebop jazz piano and African-influenced rhythms and improvisations.
The accompanying quartet features drummer Don Moye, of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, accompanied by percussionist Steve Berrios, with bass player William Allen a formidable anchor. Weston's piano melodies and excursions are entwined with Billy Harper's tenor saxophone and flute. Duke Ellington had died just a couple of months prior to this concert, and the tribute to him included here is both a fitting remembrance and a celebration of one of Weston's key influences.
