This volume proposes penetrating insights into the character of contemporary Maltese society. Thirty authors contribute 36 articles which act as critical commentaries on relevant themes. The outcome is a unique compendium which is bound to appeal to a broad readership.
In 1984 Liehm founded the magazine Lettre International, along with writer Paul Noirot. Liehm described the magazine's concept in these words: "If we had a good text, whether German, American, Russian, then we sought out a context for it. Other texts that would surround it, provide commentary, even if they were not written for that purpose at all. [...] Our goals was to produce a play of mirrors around a text."
“Malta may be a small society, but this is a big book; big not only in terms of its admirable comprehensiveness, but in terms of the contribution it represents. Probably for the first time, Maltese society is offered a thoroughgoing account of its institutions and social organization. This book is of enormous value in that context, but it is also significant upon a much more general scale. It is, in other words, a major contribution to sociology in general and a valuable comparative resource for those familiar with the institutions of other societies”. Anthony Giddens
