The first leaf contains the text,'How I came to write Strewwelpeter', with a photograph of Hoffman, saying that Peter is already 31, so giving an approximate date for this edition. The first edition is Frankfurt, 1848. In the 50s Hoffman re-drew the figure of Peter making him more stylized. The handcolouring was done with stencils. The earliest edition in the Osborne Collection is 1868. Covers soiled with the corners missing(they would have been cloth-tipped and snapping them off a real temptation !).Front free flyleaf missing, thumbed along lower margins, several short clean tears with one 10cm. long, but not affecting the text or engraving.
