Antiguo biberón chino en peltre con detalles en cobre – siglo XIX

Pieza singular y rara de colección: biberón antiguo de peltre, probablemente de origen chino, con detalle decorativo en cobre. Este tipo de utensilios fue común entre los siglos XVIII y XIX como alternativa a la lactancia materna, en un contexto de escasez de nodrizas y alta mortalidad infantil.

El biberón presenta:

• Pezón removible aún con marcas visibles de dientes
• Pajita metálica integrada para facilitar la succión
• Rosca invertida y tallada a mano, característica de la época

Estos biberones, conocidos hoy como "botellas asesinas", eran difíciles de limpiar y, al estar hechos de peltre con alto contenido de plomo, resultaban peligrosos para la salud del lactante. La leche ácida disolvía el plomo, lo que provocaba intoxicaciones fatales en muchos casos. A pesar de las advertencias médicas, su uso persistió hasta finales del siglo XIX.

A unique and rare collectible: an antique pewter baby bottle, probably of Chinese origin, with a decorative copper detail. This type of utensil was common between the 18th and 19th centuries as an alternative to breastfeeding, in a context of wet-nurse shortages and high infant mortality.

The bottle features:

• A removable nipple still with visible teeth marks
• An integrated metal straw for easier sucking
• A hand-carved, inverted thread, characteristic of the period

These bottles, known today as "killer bottles," were difficult to clean and, being made of pewter with a high lead content, were dangerous to the infant's health. The acidic milk dissolved the lead, causing fatal poisoning in many cases. Despite medical warnings, their use persisted until the end of the 19th century.
