Exquisita arca realizada en madera de roble, tallada en estilo gótico con bocallaves y bisagras en hierro fundido y forjado. Este arcón presenta un cuerpo alargado de forma rectangular en el que el panel frontal tiene tallada una ornamentación en forma de fenestración, diseño geométrico y vegetal, de estilo gótico. Se configura en dos ventanas con arcos góticos a cada lado, y un pequeño rosetón con una flor en la zona central, debajo de la cerradura. La tapa, los lados y el fondo no tienen decoraciones talladas. Esta tapa superior se abre gracias a sus bisagras de hierro originales. El interior ofrece un gran espacio de almacenamiento, usado históricamente para guardar ropa y mantas. El cofre sólido y robusto presenta un bello envejecimiento en toda la madera, buena pátina.

El arca o arcón es una tipología propia de la Edad Media y el más corriente hasta finales del siglo XV y principios del XVI. No servía sólo para guardar ropa y utensilios domésticos, sino también de asiento, mesa y cama en función de las dimensiones. El arca podría ser bien de madera tallada con motivos sacados de la arquitectura gótica, bien de cuero grabado y hierro calado y cincelado en refuerzos, ángulos y cerraduras. En el siglo XVII en Castilla son muy comunes en la zona de Valladolid las arcas de nogal, y cuando se fabrican más al norte son de castaño o roble.

Oak chest, Gothic style, 18th century – Northern Castile

Exquisite chest made of oak wood, carved in Gothic style with keyholes and cast and wrought iron hinges. This chest has an elongated rectangular body in which the front panel has carved ornamentation in the form of a fenestration, geometric and vegetal design, in Gothic style. It is configured with two windows with Gothic arches on each side, and a small rosette with a flower in the central area, below the lock. The lid, sides and bottom have no carved decorations. This upper lid opens thanks to its original iron hinges. The interior offers a large storage space, historically used to store clothes and blankets. The solid and robust chest has a beautiful aging throughout the wood, good patina.

The chest or chest is a typology typical of the Middle Ages and the most common until the end of the 15th century and beginning of the 16th century. It was not only used to store clothes and household items, but also as a seat, table and bed depending on the dimensions. The chest could be made of carved wood with motifs taken from Gothic architecture, or of engraved leather and openwork and chiseled iron in reinforcements, angles and locks. In the 17th century in Castile, walnut chests were very common in the Valladolid area, and when they were made further north they were made of chestnut or oak.
