Vallauris fue un centro alfarero que experimentó un gran crecimiento a mediados del siglo XIX gracias a la llegada del ferrocarril. Terminó por consagrarse como foco cerámico con la llegada de los pintores post impresionistas y modernos, como Chagall o Picasso, quienes buscaban en lo oriental y lo primitivo su fuente de inspiración. En estos momentos surge, entonces, las grandes fábricas, y con ellas, una verdadera organización industrial y comercial en cuanto a la producción de cerámica. 

Desde la época galo-romana la alfarería ha destacado en Vallauris gracias a la cerámica culinaria. Cazuelas, ollas y jarras han incrementado la reputación internacional de Vallauris, sobre todo por la resistencia de este material a las altas temperaturas. La llegada de Picasso en la década de 1950 otorgó a Vallauris al rango de capital de la cerámica de Francia, pues atrajo a muchos artistas ansiosos por aprender las artes del fuego.
