Descripción:

- Medalla sensiblemente rectangular, con el lado superior semicircular y asa plana sin anilla, de latón plateado, esculpida por Bartolomé Maura y Montaner, representando en el Anverso la Crucifixión junto con las Tres Marías, y en el Reverso un Sagrario. Se desconoce al fundidor de la misma, emitida en la Primera Mitad del S.XX para dedicarla a las Organizaciones Religiosas correspondientes.

- Anverso: Altorrelieve de la Crucifixión junto con las Tres Marías – María Santísima, María de Cleofás y María Magdalena – el Apóstol San Juan Evangelista, y Salomé. A la derecha del Crucifijo se encuentra San Juan de pie, en actitud orante mirando a Jesús. A la Izquierda del Crucifijo, según nuestro entender, se encuentran de pie dos Marías; una de ellas puede ser María Santísima en actitud orante mirando a Jesús, y más retirada María de Cleofás en actitud de recogimiento. A los pies de la Cruz hay dos Mujeres arrodilladas; la situada en primer plano podría ser María Magdalena con la cabeza recogida, y a la izquierda de la Cruz, y un poco retirada, Salomé en actitud orante. En la parte inferior de esta cara, tiene la leyenda “OBRA DE LAS TRES MARÍAS Y DE LOS DISCÍPULOS DE S. JUAN”. Encima de esta leyenda, y en el ángulo inferior izquierdo de la Medalla, está grabada la firma “B. MAURA”.

- Reverso: Altorrelieve de un Sagrario con la puerta abierta y la Exposición del Santísimo. En la parte superior tiene unos ángeles entre nubes. A los lados del Sagrario, crecen plantas y flores. En la parte inferior de esta cara, está la leyenda “SAGRARIOS CALVARIOS”. El Frontón del Sagrario tiene el Monograma SHJ con una cruz en su parte superior. Este Monograma está invertido con respecto al utilizado por la Compañía de Jesús, que es JHS con una cruz en su parte superior.

- Canto: Liso sin ninguna inscripción.

- Bartolomé Maura y Montaner (1844-1926), fue un artista muy reconocido, pintor, grabador y medallista. Hay obras suyas, entre otras colecciones, en el Museo del Prado, en La Biblioteca Nacional y en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Gana varios concursos y es reconocido por numerosos artistas contemporáneos, ocupando diversos puestos en Instituciones relacionadas con el Arte.

- La calidad artística de la medalla es muy alta, ejecutada mediante un estilo muy personal y con gran soltura, consiguiéndose en los altorrelieves unos efectos armónicos y expresivos.

- Esta Medalla se realizó tanto en latón plateado como en aluminio.

- Con ligeras variantes, se puede encontrar la misma medalla realizada con diversos materiales, pero firmada por EURAS, E. AUSIÓ, en incluso sin ninguna firma.

- El paso del tiempo, con sus 100 años de vida, y el desgaste del baño de plata, le ha proporcionado una preciosa y atractiva pátina.

 

Conservación y desperfectos:

- La Medalla se encuentra en muy buen estado de conservación.

- En el Anverso y en el Reverso, la Medalla presenta un desgaste del baño de plata insignificativo, en sus partes más expuestas, siendo casi imperceptible a la vista.

- Tanto en el Anverso como en el Reverso de la Medalla, el altorrelieve no presenta desgaste. El Canto no tiene golpes visibles.

 

Comentarios:

- Tanto las Medidas, como el Peso, son aproximados.

- Aunque esta medalla se puede encontrar fácilmente, generalmente suelen estar en bastante mal estado.

- Que una Medalla tenga algún Distintivo, Marca o Contraste, es de gran importancia para poder identificar datos como su autor, el sitio donde se fabricó y otros destalles.

- Muy interesante como pieza de colección y elemento decorativo.

- Presenta el desgaste propio de su tiempo.

- Debido a que es inevitable las diferencias de tonalidades entre fotos y realidad, se debe tener presente que los tonos de los colores de las fotos no son exactamente iguales a los tonos de los colores reales.

- La Medalla en venta es el que se corresponde con las fotos, que a su vez se complementan en esta Descripción, con el objetivo de proporcionar un mejor conocimiento del Objeto, y nunca ser una exposición detallada del mismo.

Description:

- Rectangular medal with a semi-circular top and flat handle without a ring, made of silver-plated brass, sculpted by Bartolomé Maura y Montaner, representing the Crucifixion on the obverse side together with the Three Marys, and a tabernacle on the reverse. It is not known who made it, but it was issued in the first half of the 20th century to be dedicated to the corresponding religious organisations.

- Front: High relief of the Crucifixion together with the Three Marys - Mary Most Holy, Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene - the Apostle St. John the Evangelist, and Salome. To the right of the Crucifix is St. John standing in a prayerful attitude looking at Jesus. To the left of the Crucifix, according to our understanding, two Marys are standing; one of them may be Mary Most Holy in an attitude of prayer looking at Jesus, and more withdrawn Mary of Cleophas in an attitude of recollection. At the foot of the Cross there are two Women kneeling; the one in the foreground could be Mary Magdalene with her head bowed, and to the left of the Cross, and somewhat withdrawn, Salome in an attitude of prayer. On the lower part of this face, there is the legend "WORK OF THE THREE MARIES AND THE DISCIPLES OF ST. JOHN". Above this legend, and in the lower left corner of the Medal, is engraved the signature "B. MAURA".

- Reverse: High relief of a tabernacle with the door open and the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. On the upper part there are some angels among the clouds. On the sides of the Tabernacle, plants and flowers are growing. On the lower part of this face, there is the legend "SAGRARIOS CALVARIOS". The pediment of the Tabernacle has the monogram SHJ with a cross on its upper part. This Monogram is inverted with respect to the one used by the Society of Jesus, which is JHS with a cross on its upper part.

- Song: Plain without any inscription.

- Bartolomé Maura y Montaner (1844-1926), was a well known artist, painter, engraver and medalist. There are works by him, among other collections, in the Prado Museum, the National Library and the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts. He won several competitions and is recognized by many contemporary artists, occupying various positions in Institutions related to Art.

- The artistic quality of the medal is very high, executed in a very personal style and with great ease, achieving harmonious and expressive effects in the high reliefs.

- This medal was made in both silver brass and aluminium.

- With slight variations, it is possible to find the same medal made with different materials, but signed by EURAS, E. AUSIÓ, in even without any signature.

- The passage of time, with its 100 years of life, and the wear and tear of silver plating, has given it a precious and attractive patina.

 

Conservation and damage:

- The Medal is in a very good state of conservation.

- On the obverse and reverse sides, the Medal shows a significant wear and tear of the silver plating, in its most exposed parts, being almost imperceptible to the eye.

- On both the obverse and reverse sides of the medal, the high relief shows no wear. The Edge has no visible blows.

 

Comments:

- Both the measurements and the weight are approximate.

- Although this medal can be easily found, they are generally in quite bad condition.

- That a medal has some Distinctive, Mark or Contrast, is of great importance to be able to identify data like its author, the place where it was made and other details.

- Very interesting as a collector's item and a decorative element.

- It presents the wear and tear of its time.

- Because it is inevitable the differences of tonalities between photos and reality, you must have in mind that the tones of the colours of the photos are not exactly equal to the tones of the real colours.
