The letter and original envelope includes his personal letterhead "RADIANT BABY" and is dated March 29, 1985.

Provenance: "SOTHEBY'S" - Contemporary Auction/ Ex- lot #251/ Year: 1992 / Private Collection, NY. Original purchase invoice included.

Letter to Liam Thompson, in full withe the following text: "I'm sending you this little note to surprise you and to say "hello". Perhaps you will enjoy looking at the pictures in the enclosed booklet about the Bownling Green Park. With best wishes to you and your family."

Hand signed “K. Haring,” One page, 8.5 x 11 inches / 28 x 21 cm.

It's likely that the recipient of the letter was a friend or romantic partner of Keith Haring.

As for the signature itself, the “K” and H” stands out. Haring would write the vertical lines of both of these letters with a swoosh. Typically, he would start the line at the top, then let it “slide” to the left, before right again, making the line assume a very faint inverted “S”-shape. This feature can be found in more or less all authentic Keith Haring signatures, as exemplified below. These signatures have all retrieved from numbered prints for sale by tier 1 galleries and auction houses.

As you can see, despite spanning several years, all of the signatures are extremely similar. Also, they all have the swooshing, slightly tilted vertical line of the “K” and “H”. They are clearly from the same source – Keith Haring.

For reference, below I have overlayed a pink exaggerated and identical “K. H” over three different authentic signatures. Again, you see the same pattern: wavy K, wavy H.

As the demonstration proves, the signature on any Keith Haring piece is probably the best way of disproving an authentic Haring piece.
